Brian (0s):
This week I interviewed the founder of Echo, Paul Barter. Paul has been a pioneering advocate for hydrogen water therapy for the past two decades. We discussed how hydrogen water works, some of the benefits of hydrogen water, such as reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, along with improving energy levels and reducing fatigue. We also discussed who shouldn't use hydrogen water. We got into the science of it all, and if you really wanna learn more about hydrogen water and how it can be a benefit to your health, this is a great interview to listen to. So thanks so much for listening and enjoy the show. All right. Welcome to the Get Lean, Eat Clean podcast.
Brian (40s):
My name is Brian Gryn and I have Dr. Paul Baron. Welcome to the show.
Paul (45s):
Thank you so much. It's an honor.
Brian (47s):
Great to have you on. We're gonna talk all things hydrogen water and, and some of the, the great benefits that people are getting from it. And yeah, you've been pioneering this for quite a while now. When did you, when did you get into this sort of aspect of health and wellness?
Paul (1m 6s):
So, 20 years ago, my wife was sick and Echo is the result of me helping her 20 years ago. So when I really began developing, the first hydrogen water system was 2009, so it's been, you know, 16 years. So 2000 9, 10, 11. And we kind of perfected it and, and launched in 2011. And so, you know, it's been around 16
Brian (1m 39s):
Years. Was there anyone else doing it at that time?
Paul (1m 42s):
No, no. There was one other per, the only other person was a, a, a university student. His name is Tyler LeBaron and he ended up coming to work with me and we're still good friends today, but he really was on the more of the research side. I was both research and developing the Echo brand. So I was the first to launch that and talk about it in 2009. And everyone thought I was crazy 'cause I was lecturing, Tyler was more still at BYU Idaho and he was figuring out what the heck it was all about.
Paul (2m 25s):
But he's, he's a brilliant guy when it comes to hydrogen as well. So we really were the two people that were pushing this in the world. Yeah. And
Brian (2m 34s):
So obviously it evolved from that. How, what, what would you explain, like if people aren't sure what the hydrogen water is, like, maybe just high level? Yeah.
Paul (2m 45s):
And that kind of sounds funny, but it's not. Right because Right. That's the number one question we get from snarky people on the website or you know, or, or social media. They'll say, isn't there already hydrogen in water? Right? So what the heck are you doing? Are you scamming people? Right. All this? So we're like, no, there's actually no hydrogen in water, hydrogen and oxygen gas combined to create a liquid. So it's no longer a gas. And that's what people need to understand is what hydrogen water means is that you have water H2O that's a liquid, and then you have dissolved hydrogen into that water.
Paul (3m 28s):
And, and technically speaking from the International Hydrogen Standards Association from Japan, which is founded by Shige ota, he has stated that unless you are using distilled water and have dis and have dissolved a half a part per million in distilled water through whatever device you're using, you don't, you really shouldn't claim hydrogen water.
Brian (3m 52s):
Hmm.
Paul (3m 53s):
Yeah.
Brian (3m 55s):
And so obviously you've come out with a few different products around that with echo water. What are some of like the main health benefits that people can potentially see with, you know, drinking hydrogen water?
Paul (4m 10s):
Probably the fastest thing people will notice the very first day is better sleep that night. Hmm. So when people drink water for the first time, the hydrogen water, or they consume it that evening, their sleep will typically be better. People that have joint issues will see a reduction of joint pain and other issues. Typically people that have mitochondrial issues will feel an energy boost or an energy increase Within three to five minutes. If you were doing EEG and we were plugging somebody's brain into an EEG device, you would see a 32% plasticity change in the brain.
Paul (4m 52s):
You would see a 58% normalization of alpha beta waves. So really a focus difference in clarity of brain and focus. That's particularly helpful. Helpful with those with A-D-H-D-A-D-D, other focus issues. And then Parkinson's. Alzheimer's, things like this. Individuals with those neurologic disorders can see significant changes in a, in a short time. We, you know, we, we have people that get our systems who have a spouse that has Parkinson's or something like this and they'll call up and say, Hey, I just got your system and we just drank it for the first time and my husband or my wife is doing this, this, and this that they haven't really done in five years.
Paul (5m 41s):
Do you think that's related? Like Yeah, it is. So, I mean, there's a lot of things that can happen. Digestion can be, people can feel a difference in the way their body's processing food in, in a fast or quick time. And, and, and the reason why is stomach acid right, is high HCL. And if you don't have the h you can't make stomach acid. So all of a sudden when you have hydrogen gas in your body, you can produce hydrochloric acid. So again, there's a mechanism for every one of these things where, where hydrogen is critical for life and for the proper function of the body, we have to have hydrogen.
Paul (6m 25s):
And that's what people need to understand is your body is designed to produce hydrogen on its own regularly. And if we have gut disruption or gut dysfunction, we're not gonna produce hydrogen the way we're supposed to. And So we will have digestive disorders, we will have joint issues, we will have oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which is the leading cause of disease. That's why hydrogen helps everything. 'cause your body's supposed to make it in the first place.
Brian (6m 52s):
Is there a way to test if you're making it or would you just say that Yes.
Paul (6m 55s):
Flatulence, you can test your flatulence for hydrogen gas. Okay. Yeah. That's normally where you'd produce it. And the colon, and I don't know if this is a hundred percent accurate, but we, we estimate that people should be able to produce 10 to 12 liters of hydrogen gas per day naturally if their gut was working properly. The real problem is 90 plus percent of the population have disruptive, you know, have gut disruption. So there's not really appropriate antiaging going on or antioxidation going on in the body because people have lost the ability to produce hydrogen naturally.
Paul (7m 36s):
So that's why I started developing the devices. I didn't create hydrogen. I know that's a shock to everyone, but I, I just created a mechanism so that you could easily get it. You didn't, you don't have to go to the top of Mount Fuji in Japan to get hydrogen water natural. You don't have to go to certain places in the world to get it. You can make it in your own home.
Brian (7m 58s):
And with your wife, what was, what was she dealing with and how did you, did you just stumble across hydrogen? Yeah,
Paul (8m 8s):
Yeah. I stumbled across, and I love the story because it, it, it, it was a stumbling. I, I'll tell, I'll ll tell ya the story quick. So I was married 31 years ago, February 26th, 1994, to the love of my life. And she was amazing. But she took birth control. I, I asked her not to when we got married, just 'cause I don't think it's great putting chemicals in your body. You never know what's gonna happen. And for her, she gained 60 pounds within the first four months of our marriage. And it was not a good situation for her.
Paul (8m 48s):
All of a sudden she had all these issues prior to that. She was walking, you know, three miles a day. She was on the, you know, typical fat free diet like everyone was doing at the time. And all of a sudden, you know, she was obese. I mean, really and truly that's, you know, and later found out that her body just is very sensitive to everything. Well, we didn't know, we didn't tie it to the birth control until many years later because you don't think, you know, you just don't think about it. But she started going to doctors. They couldn't figure out why blah, blah, blah, you know, the typical nonsense that we all go through in life, trying to figure out what's wrong and nobody seems to know.
Paul (9m 28s):
And so here we were 10 years into marriage and she was not doing well. She had thyroid issues, gynecological issues, anemia, she had short-term memory issues. I mean, it was, it was going the wrong direction. It was getting worse, not better. I used to lose her. We as a family would lose her a week out of every month 'cause she'd in pain and she would be losing 30, 40 ounces of blood per menstrual cycle. I mean, it was so, she was highly anemic. It was just not, not a good situation. Here. I was 31 years old, married 10 years. And I'm like, what, what am I, what am I supposed to do? I don't know what to do. And my scope of practice at the time where my focus one was diabetes and foot and ankle issues, and I was trying to help amputations and stuff.
Paul (10m 17s):
I, I mean, I wasn't trying to help menstrual cycle issues. That wasn't my, my area of expertise. So we had some friends that had an organic food store and nine 11 had happened and their business had gone down because people weren't going to Disney World to get because of nine 11. And So they lost half their business people wanting to buy organic food from their organic food store. And So they came to me asking for some help financially, we gave it to them. And after it hadn't been paid back, it was close to two years, I forgave all the interest and said, just paying back the principal, don't worry about the interest. And they did, within two years, they, they, they ended up paying it back.
Paul (10m 59s):
And so as a thank you, they took us on a cruise, and this was 2005, they took us on a cruise. And I was like, oh, cool. You know, yay. And of course we didn't pick the dates they did. And my wife was on the first day of her menstrual cycle, the first day of the cruise. And I was like, oh crap, this is a nine day cruise, seven days of it, she'll be down, right? And it's like, oh, this is gonna suck, you know? And so we're driving down from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale, she's doubled over in pain in the backseat of the vehicle. And it's just not a good thing. We get to the cruise and they're like, Hey, here's a little suitcase of water for you.
Paul (11m 39s):
And we're like, what? What are you talking about? That's so weird. And they're like, no, no, we don't drink the water on the ship. You know, they called it toilet water. And they're like, drink this water. And I'm like, okay. So I didn't think anything of it. I just wanted to get my wife into the bed. And so I was going to art auctions, coming back, going, you know, going, going and doing stuff and coming back and checking on her. And she got thirsty, wanted to drink some water, and I got some water for me, got some water for her. I drank the water. I felt nothing. There was no, you know, I wasn't levitating off the ground, browning wings, nothing crazy. But she drank the water and she felt something like, she was like, there's something going on.
Paul (12m 19s):
And I'm like, what are you talking about? And she goes, I don't know, but my body's craving this water. Like I'm, I want more of this water. And I'm like, well have more. I'll drink the toilet water. You drink this water. And, you know, well the, the amazing thing happened is within a day and a half, she was up and around and doing, participating and I'm like, what? So me being a guy, I'm like, I didn't care about anything else. But the fact that she was feeling great and she was on the cruise and we were having fun. We went to Costa Rica, went to Panama, I held a sloth. I mean, you know, she was with me. It was great. So I was asking my friends, what's up with this water? They're like, we don't know. We don't know what it is. It would, but that's what saved our company. That's how we were able to pay back.
Paul (12m 60s):
And I'm like, what? They're like, yeah, people are buying this water every day. Like 200 people are coming and buying a gallon of water, so we're making like four or $500 a day that saved our business. And I'm like, okay, great. That's all I cared about. Right? Like my guy. So I'm like, whatever dude. So I didn't think anything of it. And I'm like, well, but why are they buying the water? Why are 200 people a day? They're like, oh, they have all these issues. They're diabetes, they're whatever. And I'm like, wait, I'm in diabetes. What are you talking about? It helps diabetes. They're like, yeah, yeah, all these people. And I'm like, tell me what it's about. And they're like, we don't know. And I'm like, what? What about the guy you bought the machine from? Well, he doesn't know either. He says all these things, but he doesn't know why either.
Paul (13m 40s):
And I'm like, oh geez, this is scaring me. You know? Yeah. So anyways, long story short, I just was like, whatever, my wife is participating on the cruise. I'm a happy guy and let's move on. Fast forward six months, my wife's menstrual cycle is normal. We're having a little family council talking about what our month, what we're doing this month so that we know when she's gonna have her time. And she goes, I'm on my cycle right now. And we're like, what? You left the house. Like you So unbeknownst to us, she had normalized her. It had normalized her menstrual. And I said, what happened? What, what's going on? And she goes, oh, I've been going get in that water by the gallon.
Paul (14m 21s):
You didn't notice there's a gallon container in the pantry? And I'm like, no, of course not. I didn't notice. Hmm. And she's like, I've been drinking that water still. And I'm like, what? Okay, I gotta research this. 'cause I think these people are full of crap, right? So long story short, I go try and talk to this guy who sold my friends a machine that makes the water alkaline, right? And I'm like, it's definitely not the pH that's not, no, there's no way. It's the pH of the water, but what else is it? That's what I wanted to understand. And so it took me on a deep dive to try to figure out what could possibly be in this water that helped my wife that wasn't pH, because I could put baking soda in water that's not gonna do what I just saw happen to my wife.
Paul (15m 6s):
And so it took me a year and a half, Brian, to figure out that if you put hydrogen in water, it changes the properties of the water. Now I ended up testing their water. There was no hydrogen in it, but because it used electrolysis, there was hydrogen at one point, and it changed the oxidation reduction potential of water to a negative, which did help restart my wife's gut enough to right the ship, so to speak. And, and she had tremendous benefits. Well, once I learned that, I said, well, what if we actually put hydrogen in the water in addition to just having the ORP change?
Paul (15m 49s):
And that's when it was like, boom, total difference. And, and that's where I said, oh, okay, well I wanna navigate away from alkaline. I wanna make something that's neutral pH, but have hydrogen in it. And that's really where Echo was born. And it took a few iterations of the echo devices to get to the point where we did neutral pH but focused on hydrogen. Because your alkaline water machines, they're making some hydrogen, but they're making the water really high pH, which is not good for the body. And you lose the ability to have hydrogen within a few weeks because of minerals building up on the cathode.
Paul (16m 35s):
So you could no longer dissolve hydrogen gas in an alkaline system. And so what we, what we did in 2005, we had, there was a patent on reversing the polarity of the electrodes so that you wouldn't have calcium buildup on the electrodes, but we were still making alkaline pH, but we had hydrogen at least always. That was the first iteration of the Echo seven machine. And then by the time we got to the Echo nine Ultra, or you know, we had neutral pH water with hydrogen. And so it was two echo seven, echo nine, echo nine ultra. And by the third machine we had produced, we had neutral pH first company in the world doing that. And so it was a pretty exciting time actually.
Brian (17m 17s):
And I noticed you also have like a flask that you guys, so what are the main, oh, there. There it is. Yeah, there it is. So people, you just put water in there and it, and it puts the hydrogen.
Paul (17m 29s):
Yeah. You put distill filtered water at least. And then on the side you can kind of see,
Brian (17m 37s):
And
Paul (17m 38s):
You push that button right there, And now it turns on, you can see that you have a 10 minute cycle. And then if
Brian (17m 45s):
You, so you have to, do you have to wait 10? Do you have to wait 10 minutes for it to work? Is that what it, you
Paul (17m 49s):
Don't have to wait the full 10 minutes. Okay. And if you go into the app, you can change it to be five minutes or six minutes, but the 10 minutes will give you 6.25 parts per million. Okay. If you do it half that, you have three parts per million. That's plenty. 'cause half a part per million is considered therapeutic, but you can see the bubbles coming up, right? Yeah. So in our bottle, we just, it, we just have H two gas going in. Out the bottom right here is, see that little blue light that is an oxygen port. So oxygen O2, O three and CL two are coming out that port just hydrogen gas is going in.
Paul (18m 33s):
And so that's a major difference. 99% of the other products on the market that are calling themselves hydrogen bottles or whatever, they don't have that technology. They're using typical electrolysis. They're not using a protran exchange membrane assembly. So they don't have the port in the bottom. So you're having chlorine go into the water, you're having oxygen, you're having hydrogen, you, you kind of making a, who knows what into the bottle.
Brian (18m 58s):
And so people can put any type of water in there and it'll, it'll
Paul (19m 2s):
Do it any type of water in our flas.
Brian (19m 4s):
Yeah. Yeah.
Paul (19m 5s):
You could technically, but we really would rather they not use tap water.
Brian (19m 9s):
Okay.
Paul (19m 10s):
Or unfiltered water. So we really want them to put filtered water so you're not drinking contaminants in.
Brian (19m 17s):
Sure.
Paul (19m 18s):
Because
Brian (19m 18s):
We, I have a water filtration in my house, so I would just use that and then use the flask. Or I noticed you have some that are, you can get some built-ins under the sink.
Paul (19m 31s):
Yeah. So because we're the largest company in the world for hydrogen water and hydrogen technology, we have everything from inhalation where you can breathe in gas. We have bath units where you can take a bath in hydrogen water for collagen in your skin. And you know, just having a luxury bath. And then we have whole house filtration. We have reverse osmosis systems that are tankless. So you're just making a quarter gallon per minute on demand and not having to store it in a tank where you can grow mold. You, you've got it on demand clean. And then we then have three machines.
Paul (20m 13s):
We have the echo ultimate, which is which filters water coming into it and can produce four types of water. So you can have a chemical free kitchen. We then have the Echo H two, which is just the hydrogen water and filtered only for coffee and tea if people wanna drink that. And then we have another unit called the Echo Flow that does not have any filtration in it because you're supposed to combine it with already having filtration in a home or combining it with our reverse osmosis system. So we kind of can meet someone wherever they are on top of the counter or below counter. And then if they want a whole house system, we have that.
Paul (20m 57s):
So yeah.
Brian (20m 58s):
Is there someone like, does someone help install that? Or you just have to find someone local?
Paul (21m 4s):
It's pretty easy. Everything we, all of our products are quick connect fittings. So it's pretty easy just to grab either a handyman or a plumber and pay them four or 500 bucks to put a whole house for a whole house. For the under sink systems, like we have, many of our customers do it themselves because it literally takes them 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 'cause we've made it so easy, but they can hire and for a hundred dollars, 150, they could have someone put it in. We used to years ago include installation. It was just really difficult to manage that all over the United States. And then of course we had customers in Canada and Europe and Australia and we're like, we can't even begin to manage all of that.
Paul (21m 50s):
So we just, were like, here's the deal, we're gonna, yeah, we're gonna make it so easy and provide everything So they can do it.
Brian (21m 59s):
And for someone just starting out, would you say maybe just start with the flask just to get a, get a feel
Paul (22m 4s):
For it? Definitely. This is for skeptical people. Yeah. And for people traveling, it's, it's rechargeable lithium ion battery with A-U-S-B-C. You can see right underneath there, there's a, right there, there's a charger. And so all you're doing is charging it and putting water in it. You can also set up schedules if you, you know, we have an app that goes with this so that you can set up schedules three times a day, four times whenever you want to have water. And all you gotta do is keep the water in it and it'll automatically run if you've set it up on a schedule. This is really the, the easiest way to have pure hydrogen water.
Paul (22m 46s):
Then we have a pitcher, which we call the Echo family, which will do half a gallon. This is 12 ounces, which is amazing for travel. But when it comes to having a family or a wife or children, you might not wanna wait 10 minutes or for, for four different people and have 40 minute water program in the morning. Right? You could do the half a gallon pitcher and then everybody gets their water right then and there. And so in a same 10 minute cycle, you could do half a gallon or you could do 12 ounces. So it's a much better deal. Now what a lot of times happens is people will try this to see if it's gonna help them.
Paul (23m 29s):
Right? And once it helps them, they're like, oh, okay, this will be perfect for travel or when I leave the house, but I don't want that to be my only hydrogen water I can get. 'cause they kind of will turn into a water snob. Their body's gonna want this versus something else. So they'll graduate to the pitcher at minimum, or which is also battery operated and rechargeable. And you can have a drop in filter with the pitcher. So you could pour tap water into that. It will filter the water and then it'll make the hydrogen water and then they can graduate to the undery ro and and flow or, or one of the two, the Echo H two machine that can go on top of the counter or below counter.
Paul (24m 13s):
And so once people feel great and feel energy and feel less fatigue and not, you know, better sleep and all this stuff, they're like, oh, I Now I want a system that's gonna do my whole entire family and I don't wanna wait. I want it available at any second. I want it. So literally with the machines, they're all quarter gallon a minute. So you go over to them, you turn 'em on, and water's coming out with hydrogen and it feels a glass and you're done. Mm. And there's no waiting. We can even connect to their fridge if they want chilled water. So we, we have all the options available for them.
Brian (24m 49s):
Hmm. That's pretty cool. Hey everyone, quick interruption here. If you are looking to gain energy, lose inches around your waist and build strength, well look no further than my book. The Step Ladder System, six Steps to Lifelong Health and Vitality. What you get with the book is my full step-by-step plan and blueprint that I've worked with all my clients with packed into one book. With part one, you're gonna lay the foundation, tackle any common challenges that might come in your way. Part two is my six pillar blueprint, how to set yourself up with a solid plan and know exactly what to do when life throws any curve balls. And lastly, step three are learning to implementation a plan for getting results over the next weeks and beyond.
Brian (25m 33s):
So there you have it. I'll leave a link in the show notes for my stepladder system book now back to the podcast. And has there been some proof showing to help with like inflammation and, and things like that when it comes to
Paul (25m 50s):
Yeah, there's, there's currently over 1500 studies. Every one of them show two things. What's the prime, you know, the big question is a, why is our body supposed to produce hydrogen in the first place? And the reason being is nine point a half percent of our bodies should be hydrogen. Why? Because hydrogen manages oxidation and inflammation. That's the two main things it does. That's its role in the body. Yes, it can help with nitric oxide. Yes, it can help with natural carrying peptides. Yes, it can help with mitochondrial, you know, by, by getting rid of hydroxyl radicals right there. There's many things it can do. And we can go all different conversations depending on what part of the body we wanna talk about.
Paul (26m 33s):
However, its primary role is to manage oxidation So we don't get oxidative stress and then inflammation. 'cause the combination of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation is disease. And so hydrogen, you got 1500 studies, almost every one of them starts by saying oxidative stress and inflammation are causing cancer or diabetes or Parkinson's or whatever. And hydrogen is known as an anti inflammation or antioxidative substance. So every single study, 1500 now are gonna show a reduction. Reduction of inflammation. Absolutely.
Brian (27m 13s):
Hmm. And what about gut health? Has there been impact on, on hydrogen water and Yep.
Paul (27m 21s):
Well, absolutely. If, if our guts were working properly, we would make hydrogen.
Brian (27m 28s):
Right?
Paul (27m 29s):
When our guts aren't, which is 97% of the population we estimate you can produce hydrogen the way you're supposed to. However, hydrogen water will fix it. So I can take someone with gluten and dairy intolerance, and this is not every retirement, nothing's a hundred percent right. We all, we all know that we're big boys and girls. We know. We're not saying 100% of everybody in every situation, but I would say the majority of individuals who drink hydrogen water, that is actually real hydrogen water, within two weeks you can take someone with gluten and dairy intolerance and they can be eating gluten and dairy with no inflammatory response in the body. And that's pretty amazing for people.
Paul (28m 10s):
Hmm. Because they're like, holy cow, you changed me what I can eat and not eat. And it is life changing. But it starts in the first hour. And what happens is we have bacteria in our gut. Typically we should have 96 to 99% should be anaerobic microflora. And only one to 4% should be aerobic. Well, if we overuse an antibiotic or if we have glyphosate or other chemicals that get into our system that can disturb that environment or what we call a terrain or a biome, Those bacteria no longer have an environment that they can live and thrive in.
Paul (28m 51s):
And so they'll go away. They, they just don't, can't live there anymore. Just like if there was a fire that burned out our neighborhood, we're not gonna still live in our house just 'cause it's our house. We are not comfortable there. It, it's not where we're comfortable living until it's rebuilt. Well, the same is true for bacteria in our gut. Until we rebuild that environment, they're not going to live and thrive. Hydrogen can change that terrain and biome rapidly within an hour of drinking the water. It's already changing the electrical potential of the tissue in the gut, creating a habitation for the bacteria. And they will just start coming again.
Paul (29m 32s):
And a lot of times people will say, gosh, I'm eating a healthy diet and all I have is diarrhea, for example, I'm eating salads and I have diarrhea. Well, you know, you can't process fiber. So you probably have a predominance of aerobic bacteria, which wants carbs and sugar. It's anaerobic that can process fiber and fats. And so you really do need both. But the majority of what you need is anaerobic microflora, which should also tell us what our diet should be. Mostly con, you know, consist of is fats and fiber versus carbs and sugar. And so, but we should be able to process both.
Paul (30m 12s):
Sure. And there's nothing, I eat everything. I eat ice cream, I eat dairy, I eat whatever I, I eat a very, very diet because I think it's appropriate to have a complete mixture of bacteria in our gut that can process all kinds of foods. Now, what's appropriate to eat most of the time would be your fats and your fiber. And that's naturally what we would have more of when we look at food content. But we should be able to eat whatever we want and our bodies should be able to process it. And so with gut health, there are studies on tight junction and how the water with hydrogen, how the hydrogen restores the tight junction in there.
Paul (30m 58s):
There's studies on IBS, there's studies on all kinds of gut issues showing that hydrogen will stop gut issues in general. Hmm. The only one that you need to be a little bit careful in the protocol would be hydrogen based sibo. If you have methane based sibo, you're fine drinking hydrogen water. But if you have hydrogen based sibo, then you need to start out with a small amount of hydrogen water so you don't end up with an inflammatory response in your small intestine. Hmm. That's it. And h pylori, if someone has h pylori, which hopefully people don't have h pylori, but if you have h pylori, the H in h pylori means hydrogen and that means that hydrogen can be an energy source for h pylori.
Paul (31m 45s):
And so if you drink, if you pounded some hydrogen water, you're gonna have a nice energy source for h pylori. But just get rid of h pylori, you know, just like we can get rid of sibo, small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. All, all SIBO really means is we have the right bacteria too far north in the intestinal tract. We, we need it down in the colon, we don't need it up in the small intestine. So that's kinda what it is. But again, there's two types of sibo. There's a hydrogen base and a non hydrogen base. And so if you don't have the hydrogen base, then it doesn't matter. Drink as much hydrogen water as you want. If you have the hydrogen base, you'll know because you'll have some discomfort in your small intestine.
Paul (32m 25s):
And what would you do then? A, get rid of SIBO and follow the protocols to do that, but also drink less of the hydrogen water so that the hydrogen water can fix the gut environment. And it'll take a little while for you, but you have to drink less water to begin with.
Brian (32m 42s):
Yeah, that's what I was sort of gonna ask you. If there are certain people that shouldn't be, you know, drinking hydrogen water and those are, those are the two main cases. That's
Paul (32m 50s):
It. That's it. There's not no other issue. No, no disease model, no condition. Everyone else can drink as much as they want and there's no issue at all.
Brian (32m 60s):
So if someone has someone like h pylori, obviously you'd wanna try to rid yourself of that.
Paul (33m 5s):
Yeah.
Brian (33m 6s):
First.
Paul (33m 6s):
Oh, for sure. Yeah. You don't want h pylori.
Brian (33m 9s):
Yeah. Yeah.
Paul (33m 10s):
Get rid of that and then drink water and let your gut be restored. You know, energy increase, brain clarity. There's so many things that will quickly come into their life because hydrogen is critical for those functions. So water, we all need water. In my case, I'm using water as a delivery vehicle for hydrogen gas. That's really what I'm doing. And so once you get hydrogen in your system, you're going to eat foods with pesticides and you're gonna eat foods with heavy metals and you're gonna eat who knows what. And so you're gonna be just damaging your gut. And then you're drinking water to restore your gut bacteria. And it's just a yo-yo a little bit of a mi tiny yo-yo effect.
Paul (33m 52s):
But you're harming yourself, you're helping, you're harming, you're helping. And so it'll keep you in a normal range all the time by drinking hydrogen water because our food is bringing into our body the issues. Of course, air is too and chemicals on our skin, but typically pesticides are coming through food And you know, people aren't usually disciplined or wanting to change their diet to completely organic non GMO Sure. Where you're not bringing pesticides. So with, with echo water, you don't, you don't necessarily have to do that.
Paul (34m 33s):
You can restore your gut, your kidneys and pancreatic system in general will have, will, will lower inflammation. So your actual kidneys And what have you can filter out the stuff and get it out of the body. You know, so there's, there's a lot of benefits of, from an inflammatory response, you know, and a weight loss, you know, one of the studies is on from obesity magazine talked about the fact that drinking hydrogen water was similar to a calorie restriction diet.
Brian (35m 8s):
Hmm.
Paul (35m 9s):
And so that's cool. You don't who, who would ra, you're like, which would you rather calorie restriction diet or a drink hydro water, drink hydro water, please. You know, so
Brian (35m 16s):
That seems, how, how is that, I don't know if you, I'm sure you can leave, leave the, we can leave the links in the show notes. But how do the two run side by side like that as far as drinking hydrogen water and, and equaling?
Paul (35m 31s):
So a calorie restriction diet is doing what? It's taking a load off of your system. Right. Because you're eating less food. So if you have digestive disorders, which is the ma major part of the population, if you're taking less food in sure your body can handle it easier. Sure. Drinking hydrogen water restores gut function. So your capacity to process foods is increasing. It's a nice marketing line to say drinking hydro water is same as a calorie restriction. What they're talking about is weight loss. And what they're talking is body mass index weight loss for fat loss.
Paul (36m 16s):
We're talking about body composition. All those things were tested. All those biomarkers were tested in their system. And all they're saying is with one group over here, those that had a calorie restricted diet, this was their result. And over here we had these people drink hydro water and their result was the same. So what's the difference? Weight loss and body mass index change, waist to hip ratio change. That's what was one of the things they tested. And so all it's saying is hydrogen water promulgates weight loss or fat loss. And so does the calorie restriction diet. Hmm. And so it's different mechanisms the way that happens. One, you're improving digestion and the other one you're taking off part of the load and so your body's able Got it.
Paul (37m 3s):
Interesting. Not accumulate fat as much. Right. Yeah. So that's really what's happening. It's not like one's doing what the other's doing. They're two different mechanisms, but you're getting to the same result at the end. And, and so who, who would rather sit and figure out how many calories you're taking in versus just drink hydrogen water? You know? So I I'm just saying it's, it's an easier modality. Yeah. To get to the same place. How
Brian (37m 27s):
Long have you been drinking it for like
Paul (37m 31s):
20 years. I'm 52. I've been drinking it since I created it. And it's been incredible. I have never had a disease. I don't have aches and pains. I run and jump and do whatever the heck I want to do and play golf and I, and do whatever I want. I live in Utah now, so there's some, a lot of things to do winter and summer and fall and spring. So I just get up in the morning, you know, I sleep wonderfully. I, you know what I mean? There's literally no issues and my entire body. And unfortunately for those that have those, I feel bad.
Paul (38m 11s):
And I, I don't wanna say that in a prideful manner, but the reality is you can have that too. And that's why I'm talking about it in this way because we should not have all these issues. If our body was producing hydrogen the way they're supposed to, you wouldn't have the issues you have either. Right? I just don't have them because my body has hydrogen and, and it's managing itself. And whenever I take all these tests, they're like, holy cow, you're like a 25-year-old. You know, you're your heart rate variability and you're this and you're that and you're whatever your cholesterol, you're all, you know, all these things that they say are indicators of health, which cholesterol definitely is not one of those in my opinion. But that's what they say. Right? And they keep lowering the cholesterol threshold so that people are more and more unhealthy.
Paul (38m 56s):
But if we understand cholesterol, it's there because our body put it there. Either two reasons. Cholesterol is a huge energy source for the body if your body's processing fat. And number two, if you are under oxidative stress and inflammation, you're at risk of hemorrhaging because the plasticity is lost in your veins and vessels. And so the body will use cholesterol as a patch to bolster an area where you're weak. And so understand cholesterol's a very good thing. Unless we just say, great job body, I'm gonna keep on pummeling you with oxidative stress and inflammation and then eventually you're gonna have blood pressure issues.
Paul (39m 38s):
Now in the studies with diabetes, for example, there are 77 studies on diabetes with hydrogen water and 80, typically you see a 80% normalization of blood glucose levels in the studies, which is wonderful. Right? Why don't we have this being shouted from the rooftops and on every news station that drinking hydrogen water can normalize blood glucose levels with people with type two diabetes mellitis or type one. But you know, in those same studies it showed a 15.5% reduction of cholesterol. And so someone would say, why would you see that? Well you would see that because you're offloading inflammation and oxidative stress systemically, so therefore the veins and vessels are be, are getting more plus having more plasticity and you don't need the LDL anymore.
Paul (40m 29s):
So the body's removing it because the body's intelligent.
Brian (40m 33s):
Are there any other ways to get hydrogen into the diet? Like are there tablets or, I know there's some companies that maybe have some tablets and things like that, or there are other ways to get it into the body.
Paul (40m 44s):
Yes. There is one person in Canada, his name is Alex. Eva, who makes tablets and basically private labels 'em for everyone. Okay. So there's nothing special about any of the tablets other than whatever the label on the bottle is, is whoever's trying to make the money. I'm not a fan of the tablets. I was, Robert Slovak and I, 15 years ago were the first two companies to ever sell tablets. I stopped selling them because of gut issues and magnesium. The magnesium used in tablets is in a reactive state and you're not reacting a hundred percent of the magnesium. So you still have magnesium in an elemental state going into the body and it doesn't taste great either.
Paul (41m 25s):
So a lot of people don't care for the taste of the water because the tablets have a very strong magnesium taste. And the reason I don't care for them is because I don't like the cost structure that is forced on the consumer. You're talking 60 cents to a dollar for a glass of water. And that to me is obscene. When I could make something like this that will last five, minimum five years, 'cause there's a five year warranty and it's gonna produce peak hydrogen for five and a half years minimum using this three times a day. Now if you use this three times a day, it's not gonna change your cost 'cause you paid for it once And now you have it for five and a half years.
Paul (42m 11s):
But if you take three tablets a day, now you're $3 a day. Right? And so if, if you're gonna spend $150 a month on tablets, it makes no sense. Well what if you have a wife and children, are they gonna get it too? And now you're buying 4, 5, 6 bottles a month And now you're $300 a month to get everybody hydro water where again, you can pay for this once and you don't have it. So I discontinued the tablets years ago, many years ago we sold thousands and thousands and thousands of bottles. I just didn't care for 'em because of the cost structure, to be honest with you. And it doesn't cost that much to make the tablets, it's just the way the manufacturer is doing it is they force everyone to sell it at the same price so it doesn't become mm.
Paul (42m 59s):
A, a race to the bottom and it's just in a, and it's inappropriate. It, it's, there are much less expensive ways to get the same efficacy or higher efficacy and just the cost difference. We sell this for 2 99 retail to even do one tablet a day for the five years would be $1,500 for someone with tablets. So you're talking five, it's cost five times more for what this does to reproduce what this does with tablets. And this does, this doesn't taste like magnesium, it has a pure taste. But we have just introduced, with that all being said, we have just introduced our hydrogen prebiotic drink drink mix.
Paul (43m 48s):
So we just introduced, I don't know if you've tried it, but we'll be happy to send you some. It's got a crisp apple flavor, so it tastes amazing. It produces, you know, six to eight parts per million of hydrogen gas just like our flask does. But you have three prebiotics for those that are trying to help their gut. So what we're doing is a departure, this is for hydrogen water, the drink mix is for a prebiotic. If you're looking to get a prebiotic and really get your gut working faster and better, you have hydrogen and a prebiotic. And it's a line of products that I'm gonna do for joint issues, for brain issues, for all the things combining.
Paul (44m 33s):
But, but this is going to be your least expensive way to try. And, and, and someone's gonna say, well wait, your, your drink mixes are only $59 for 30 days. Yeah, that's true for, for testing. You're right. Someone could test it for $59 and see if they like the hydrogen in their body. And, and that is true, $59 for one time test versus 2 99. Yes, I agree with them. The drink mix would be less money, but for using it, the, the tablets or the drink is a very expensive option versus getting,
Brian (45m 11s):
Getting the fla the flask. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Paul (45m 14s):
I hope that makes sense and didn't confuse anyone, but yeah.
Brian (45m 18s):
Yeah. Well this is great. We could probably talk forever. I know there's tons of studies, but I yeah, I'm definitely intrigued in in, in and looking forward to maybe trying to flask out, you know, just to see how, how Yeah. You know,
Paul (45m 34s):
Well, you're gonna notice things right away. I will tell ya that and the human performance coach of the 49 ERs just got our flask right now. This guy works out every day. He's teaching the best football players in the country how to exercise and, and have their body be at efficiency. And he got our flask and he's, he's using wearables, right? So wearables are gonna tell ya what's going on and Sure, he called, he called me, I didn't know him. This, the connection was through the ice bath company that the 49 ERs use and the professor who manufactures and, and developed the first ice bath in the world, they have it at the 49 ERs.
Paul (46m 17s):
And he gave him one of our flasks, we're friends, the guy that makes the ice bath. So then the, the human performance guy from the 49 ERs said, can I have Dr. Paul's phone number because I'd really like to talk to him. He called me up and he goes, you know, I'm all about human optimization and performance. And he goes, I spend my life on myself becoming optimized. And he goes, I drank your water for the first day and my wearables are telling me all these difference in recovery, all these differences in my sleep, all these differences. He goes, what the heck is this? Like, yeah,
Brian (46m 56s):
This
Paul (46m 57s):
Is, this changed me. And I said, well, let me, let me explain some of the mechanisms. And he goes, oh my gosh, I need it for my top eight players. And of course we shipped them And now they're using our water. And he's like, this is incredible. Oh my gosh. Right. And so I would say everyone can have a benefit, even if you are doing great and, and trying to optimize health, or if you have an acute disease and, and you have a loved one who you don't know what to do for them like I did, you can help anyone. And so I don't care what disease they have, it doesn't matter. We have 125 studies on cancer.
Paul (47m 36s):
And the beautiful thing with hydrogen water is you, if it's true hydrogen water, there's no contraindication with taking it while using chemotherapy. In fact, there are studies on chemotherapy and hydrogen water at the same time, and it compliments one another because apoptosis has turned back on and these cancer cells destroy themselves. That's what hydrogen does for cancer cells. So there's so many ways, there's no negative and it's worth trying because you will feel better, it will optimize, it will help you. And so it's, it's not a miracle cure, it's just getting back into your body what your body should have in the first place.
Brian (48m 18s):
Hmm. Well, Dr. Paul, this was, this was good stuff. Yeah. And best place for people to find you and your products eco.
Paul (48m 28s):
So our, our website for products is echo water.com. Okay. Just ECHO water.com. If you're looking to do research, which I hope you are, because if people come to you and go, I have diabetes, or I have Parkinson's, or I have whatever, will it help me? You can literally go to hydrogen studies.com and type in disease model or type in obesity or type in weight loss or type in whatever. And you'll have studies that will come up showing you that you can read and you can parse the data between subject country they were published in, you know, outcomes, whatever you want to do.
Paul (49m 9s):
We really made this page as a resource, a public service.
Brian (49m 13s):
Hmm. Perfect. Well, I, I was curious to learn about this and that's why I wanted to have you on. So,
Paul (49m 21s):
Well, thank you so much. I hope you learned, I hope you can get passionate like I am, I'm a little passionate about it because No, hey, hey, it's helped my wife And
Brian (49m 30s):
You know, you built a company around something you're passionate about and I think that, you know, that's important, so
Paul (49m 35s):
Oh, yeah, yeah,
Brian (49m 36s):
Yeah. Well,
Paul (49m 38s):
I mean, all the, all the UFC uses our water, right? You go to UFC Apex, you've got our water machine there, you, you, Dana White, Tom Brady, all these guys are are using, and, and, and these guys know they wanna optimize their body, right? I mean, you look at a UFC fighter, they are just beating themselves up every day, even when they're not in a fight, right? They're still beating themselves up. So I feel honored that we have, you know, so many different professional athletes, teams like the Dodgers and all these, you know, that, that are, are doing well in their field and using our water for years. The djokovich the tennis player, right? Like six years now.
Paul (50m 19s):
Ronaldo the soccer player, he's got every one of our products. So I, I would hope that one of these people we've talked about is someone that you're following, whoever's listening to us today and, and hopefully you can just try it for you, but more even for loved ones that, that are struggling. That's why I did this. It wasn't for, you know, any reason I didn't wake up one day and say I want a water company. It really was, I want to help people accomplish their divine potential. And that's what it comes down to for me. So thank you for this, Brian. I'm honored to be here educating.
Brian (50m 56s):
Yeah. And thank you again for coming on Dr. Paul. Yeah, appreciate, have a great rest of the day.
Paul (51m 1s):
You as well.
Brian (51m 2s):
