Do you want to burn FAT? ?

How can I start burning FAT?
This is a common question I get from clients. This probably one of the most popular questions over the past decades regarding health and wellness.
We all want fat to just melt off our bodies!! Well, unfortunately a lot of nutritional advice is leading us down the opposite path because we are being informed to graze or snack all day because our brains run on glucose and we need it to for our bodies to run efficiently and to have energy.
Well, I am here to tell you that if you snack all day and are in a FEEDING STATE from 8 am to 8 pm you will not be able to use your fat stores for energy.
Quick Lesson - We all have two fuel sources that we run on - Glucose (sugar) and Fat.
- Glucose is stored in the liver and is easy to access for energy but there is only a limited amount you are able to store
- Fat is much more difficult to access, but you may store unlimited amounts of it
Important to note - the body can either burn sugar (glucose) or fat, but not both. Mostly all individuals run on glucose because they are in a fed state and never use their fat stores for energy!
But before we can use our own body fat for energy we have to burn through our glycogen stores first. (which could take some time depending on the person)
Well, how can we gain access to using fat for energy?
By following a very low-carb high-fat diet or
ketogenic diet, and/or
intermittent fasting you can train your body to be a fat burner.
Our bodies have the wonderful ability to adapt to what's available. When we fast, we deplete much of the stored sugar (glycogen) and then our muscles become much more efficient at using fat for energy.
In order to become a fat burner it takes time, patience and depends on your past way of eating.
For those who are experienced with fasting, the next step would be to
exercise in a fasted state.
Studies are starting to show the benefits of training in a fasted state. 1 So instead of relying on limited glycogen during competition, you are now powered by an almost unlimited energy of fat stores!
- For example, if you are running ultra marathons, being able to utilize your almost unlimited fat energy instead of highly limited glycogen energy will mean that you won't 'bonk' and might just win that race! 2
In another study, eight young men fasted for 3.5 days and there was no decrease in strength, anaerobic capacity and aerobic endurance during the fasting period! 3
So to summarize, there is an adjustment period to get your body to become a fat burner. This could last a few weeks. As you deplete your body of sugar, your muscles need time to adapt to using fat for energy and at first your energy, muscle strength and overall capacity will go down but you will recover.
Using a keto, low-carb high-fat diet and/or training in a fasted state do require time for your body to adapt but eventually your body simply switches from burning sugar to burning fat.
I hope this helps clarify that it is possible to use your fat stores for energy you just have to use the right methods to eventually become a fat burning machine!!
Have a great day!!
